Friday Faves

Sorry for yet another late post, I was all over the place yesterday! I should just change this to "weekend faves" so I can have the whole weekend to gather some goodies for you all. This week's inspiration is typography. There are so many ways to write a letter, and so many people share an obsession with it, so I thought i'd inspire you all with these great prints.

More Art!

I finally recieved my set of very cute 4x4 notecards with my photography printed on them. Hopefully I can set them up in the shop tomorrow. I got them from Moo.com, a great little printing company based out of England. I also printed out mini business cards with my photos on one side and my info on the back-SO cute.

Ah, I can't wait to pass them out to friends and start selling my photos. Hopefully soon I'll be able to sell larger scale photos and maybe ones mounted on wood (hello, Plywerk!) or canvas. But, for now, I'll see how these little gems sell.

*Breaking News: I just purchased a ton of prints of my photos from QOOP. Oh boy, now the excitement starts!*

Lecture Notes

Every monday night, PSU hosts a free artist lecture to the public. They are always packed with art students, and its always an interesting night. This week's lecture came from techno-savvy (and perhaps low-tech savvy) duo Lucky Dragons. This pair creates music using a cord that creates a human current, which audience members use to create their own sound. Members Sara and Luke try to break down the authority of being a "band" and instead invite their audience members to become their own band.

Lucky Dragons also created the Sumi Ink Club, in which meetings consist of random people drawing on one huge piece of paper, which is later auctioned or sold, or just left behind for others to enjoy and contemplate. The lecture was slightly chaotic but also a good look inside their quirky lives and work. You can find out about the Sumi Ink club here, and visit their insane website here.

Etsy Tuesday: Valhalla Brooklyn

This week is the start of my winter term at PSU. I'll be taking drawing concepts (a cool class that allows you to draw whatever you like with whatever material while looking at drawing theory and what defines a "drawing"), etching/intaglio with my cool printmaking teacher (this will be super fun but also a big learning challenge, ive never done etching before!), and a continuation of my spanish courses.

So while I figure out my life and try to get inspired for future art works, I'll give you some great bags and wallets from the SUPER talented one-woman powerhouse at Valhalla Brooklyn. Karin designs and sews all her gorgeous leather bags, purses and wallets out of her house. Her creations are so fabulous, I wish every celebrity would wear one because they might be the next huge purchase I want to save up for. Great work Karin! You can buy her goodies here, and heres a great article about handling her super busy life here.

Hellooo Lindsay Lohan, are you reading this? You'd love this bag, I know it. Get one for Samantha too.

Her leather looks so soft and delicious. These are marc jacobs meets indie sewing queen cool.

Friday Faves-a little late!

Sorry for the no-post AGAIN yesterday..where is my mind wandering? I also had work for a good part of the day. I also am changing the layout, since my inspiration boards have been turning out rather ghastly, ill stick with single pictures that aren't blurry. This week's round-up is an homage to that great, grainy polaroid. Ah, I wish I had one. Have a great weekend!

The old-school feel Polaroids give me remind me of hot days playing in my grandparent's backyard when I was little and picking tangerines..

Broke Girl's Dinner

Recently I've been making some pretty delish meals for myself, using as much as I can directly from my pantry, fridge, etc without having to go out and get take-out. So far I've made a delicious meal of mini mozzarella balls, basil and roma tomatoes with potato gnocchi, avgolemono soup (greek soup using chicken broth, orzo, a dash of lemon juice and an egg, SO simple and delicious), and tonight I'm posting as a pot of "Poor Girl's Soup" is boiling away on the stove... let me give you this easy recipe (im making it up as i find some hidden vegetable thats been sitting around). During these hard times, you have to use what you have in all aspects...so here goes!

Poor Girl's Soup (aka what to cook when theres nothing left to cook and you ain't getting paid til next week!)

-beef broth/chicken broth/beer, WHATEVER you can find that could make a tasty broth. I used the last dregs of beef broth, a swig of dark beer (my boyfriend left his here, woops!), and some chicken broth. Trust me, it'll all taste yummy.
-beef, that last piece of frozen chicken, your pick. (I used frozen cubed beef I had from a previous week's stew making)
-1 chopped onion
-1 cubed potato
-roasted garlic
-assorted veggies of your choosing (root vegetables work marvelously)
-leftover dried pasta (I just poured in some elbow macaroni for substance)
-flour, milk, baking powder to make dumplings (used 1 1/4 c flour, 1/2 c milk, 1 tsp. baking powder)

Directions:
-sweat the onions in a big pot with oil, til clear. Add seasoned/floured beef, brown. Add broth, beer, liquid of some sort, and add potatoes. Bring to a boil. Add remaining veggies, dried pasta, let cook. Mix together your dumpling ingredients and add 10 minutes prior to eating. Enjoy knowing you just cleared out your pantry and didn't spend any money on take-out, plus you'll have leftovers for tomorrow!

There we have it. The first day of the New Year was spent cleaning my apartment, putting up artwork (I put up some great maps I found at a map sale at school and some lovely prints), and watching Sex and the City. Now I'm gonna enjoy my frugal soup and not be guilty. Have a lovely start to the new year!
